The airline was founded as Alisarda on March 29 1963 by the Aga Khan as an operator of air taxi and charter flights to encourage tourists to travel to Sardinia. Traditional services began in 1964 from Olbia. In 1989, there was an extension in the capital of 35% that was offered to new investors to strengthen the company, also the denomination was adopted on May 3 1991. The first international service was operated on at the end of that same year toward Barcelona, Paris, London and Frankfort.

In January 2004 it was reported that the airline was considering replacing its fleet of McDonnell Douglas MD-82 for 17 Airbus A320-200. In December 2004 the airline had won the bid for the routes of the obligatory public service to and from Sardinia. However, at the end of December, an Italian court suspended the contract on a temporary basis until the case is resolved.

This will be possible thanks to the 87 destinations that will operate from bases in the northern half of the country: 32 national (including links to the south and the islands of Sardinia and Sicily area), 48 international and intercontinental. In Spain works cheap flights to Madrid (from Florence and Milan) and cheap flights to Barcelona (from Florence and Cagliari).

However, although the process of integration of the administrative and commercial structures of the two companies are developing rapidly, still need to be polished and cut fringes, for the moment both fleets will retain their respective corporate images in their flights: a total of 35 Airbus A319, A320 and A330 over the MD82. The releases of the company ensures that one of its objectives is to maintain the good results of timeliness (84 %) and regularity (92 %) that were in the previous stage.

Having had a great outbound flight and reviewed it, I was a little preoccupied about our return flight on Meridiana from Florence heading to Gatwick. Nothing to be worried about as it was also fine. It was punctual, arrived at Gatwick before scheduled time. The check in at Florence airport was great and helpful service on board. Fortunately we were able to move to other seats in the same row across the aisle, since the seats were we were sitting were not as comfortable. So, I would suggest you avoid a window seat by emergency exit but the crew was polite and helpful.
